Dennis Coffey Announces Record Store Day 7″

Following the recent announcement of the superb new self-titled studio album by Detroit guitar legend, Dennis Coffey, Strut will be accompanying the release with an exclusive 45 issue for this year’s Record Store Day featuring one digital-only track from the album and a brand new remix by producer legend, Steinski.

The release reinforces the strong, long-standing link between Coffey’s music and the world of hip hop – Coffey originals like ’Scorpio’ and ’Taurus’ have become bona fide breakbeat staples sampled by many, from Blackalicious to LL Cool J. And Steinski is cemented in hip hop history as one of the most important cut-up DJ / producers of all time, unleashing the seminal ’Lessons’ cut-up series alongside Double Dee in 1983/4 – the break from Coffey’s ’Scorpio’ appeared in the last of these mixes, ’Lesson 3.’ Steinski would later touch the national charts with Kennedy assassination broadcast-sampling ’The Motorcade Sped On.’ More recently, he has recorded for Ninja Tune and has worked on various soundtrack projects for TV and ads.

For this new 45, Steinski tackles an instrumental track from the ’Dennis Coffey’ album sessions, ’Ubiquitous.’ The original version, also featured here, is a pulsing breakbeat chugger true to the style of Coffey’s ’70s instrumental work on Sussex Records. Steinski re-works the track subtly, re-arranging the guitar ad organ parts and allowing the riffs to simmer on a shuffling, funky backbeat. Copies are strictly limited.

Talib Kweli – Gutter Rainbows

On Reflection Eternal’s 2000 album “Train of Thought,” Talib Kweli challenged fans, and himself, to “do what comes naturally.” After years of recording on mainstream labels, he now has the chance to produce exactly what he wants—and feels he needs—to produce: an album straight from his mouth to the ears of his fans. Invoking the true meaning of MC, Master of Ceremonies, Kweli brings incredible power to his live shows and feeds off the spontaneous energy of his audiences. Being able to interact directly with his audience and the musicians he most respects, he has created an album and a sound that best reproduces that ceremony for his fans. Finally, after serious urgency in the studio, Kweli presents ‘Gutter Rainbows,’ an album that takes a trip back to childhood while marking the newest stage in his long and dynamic career. This newest release, recorded on his time and with his talent as the driving force, proves Kweli is a complete and formidable musician—it presents the depth and breadth of his experience and ability, and sets a new bar for the cutting edge of hip-hop music.

Through Kweli’s various collaborations, he has been able to grow as an artist and expand his fan base. For over 15 years, Kweli has been a king of New York hip-hop who has an expansive international audience. Kweli’s work with Mos Def on “Black Star” (1998) still stands as one of hip-hop’s premiere expressions of truth. On “Train of Thought,” Kweli teamed up with Hi Tek to form Reflection Eternal, a virtuoso hip-hop duo that continues to wow audiences and critics alike. In 2007, Kweli and DJ/Producer/MC Madlib gave their fans “Liberation”—originally released free on the internet—an album that was filled with their joint love of the music they make and the respect their fans give them. Performing all over the world with unique style and an unequaled dedication to his music, Kweli has worked with artists as diverse as Kanye West, Justin Timberlake, MF Doom, Mary J. Blige, Fabolous, Common, Nelly, The Roots, Quincy Jones, Gucci Mane, Norah Jones, KRS-One and many more. With a career filled with success and innovation, it comes as no surprise that both Jay-Z and 50 Cent, at the height of their stardom, both counted Kweli among their favorite rappers. On his “solo” albums, there is no question that his lyrical talent and unique musical drive rank up there with the best in the business. Recording with other world famous musicians or alone on the mic, Kweli gives both the long-time fan and the uninitiated an unforgettable experience.

“Gutter Rainbows” was recorded with the help of incredibly talented musicians from across the country. Eric Krasno, Jean Grae, Strong Arm Steady, Iron Solomon, Outasight, Kendra Ross, Sean Price, 88-Keys, Marco Polo, Ski
Beatz, M-Phazes, S-1, E. Jones, Oh No and others make appearances. With this record, Kweli is able to make the music he knows and loves, play with the best musicians around, and bring it straight to his fans.

As a boy growing up in Brooklyn, Kweli saw gutters that ran with dirt, oil and water, revealing a shimmering rainbow to his child’s eyes. Drawing its title from this memory, this album puts at the raw center what his music has been doing for years: finding and preserving the beautiful in the hideous; the rainbows in the gutter. Weaving the lyrical and the gritty, the autobiographical with an honest, no-holds- barred hip-hop spirit; Kweli sticks fiercely to what feels true to him in creating the sound of this album.

Without being tied to any particular label’s conception of what his sound should be or when his work should hit his fans, Kweli is free to build his most personal album yet in both content and motivation. Kweli’s true solo career has only just begun, and although the future holds more collaboration, “Gutter Rainbows” marks a new stage in the long and ever-evolving career of Talib Kweli.

Free Music: The Nuthouse – Camden High & Rising

Breakadawn
Camden, New Jersey collective The Nuthouse consisting of emcees Dave Ghetto and Fel Sweetenberg have released what some say is the most official De La Soul tribute mixtape to date, Camden High & Rising. Not because of the high level of talent exhibited by Ghetto and Sweetenerg, but because this project is hosted by The Compound Show’s Set Free and none other than the Skit Master himself, DJ Prince Paul, producer of many of De La’s most memorable classics.

Now, couple that with the fact that THE NUTHOUSE, are extremely skilled wordsmiths, this project will definately grab your ear as they pay homage to one of hip-hop’s most innovative groups, in a way that only they can.

The group debuted in 1998 with the classic 12″, A Luv Supream on Bobbito’s fabled Fondle ‘Em imprint. Goodvibe Recordings quickly followed up with a Nuthouse EP entitled Deez Nuts which featured cameos by El da Sensai (Artifacts), Planet (Outerspace) and Diamond Back (Deadly Snakes).

They appeared with Slum Village and Bahamadia on the 2000 Goodvibe tour, and has rocked mics on both coasts with hip hop all-stars such as Aceyalone and Jean Grae.

Big Tone + “Flesh and Sole” (EP)

Detroit rapper and producer Big Tone has just released his latest project, “Flesh and Sole” EP.

This is…”Just something for those who have been rocking with me since day one. I realized I want to make more of a commitment to my listeners, so I locked myself in the lab and cooked up this little EP. I’m in a good space right now, and just wanted to share. This project marks a moment in life in which I’m growing comfortable in my own skin (hence, the word “flesh”), and am standing firm on my own two ( hence, the word “sole”). Thus, I’m presenting The Flesh and Sole EP.

Thank you.” – Big Tone

EL-P ~ “Meanstreak”

EL-P - Meanstreak (in 3 parts)

El-P has been leaking some tracks from the upcoming Weareallgoingtoburninhellmegamixxx3. The prosepect of a Donuts-style instrumental album from one of the most distinct producers in hip-hop was a lot to think about, and excitement is sure to bubble over with the latest leak, a three part suite of pummeling percussion and sinister synths. Physical copies of Volume 3 of the Megamixx series will include download links to the first two volumes, which were only available at live shows. Weareallgoingtoburninhellmegamixxx3 comes out August 3rd on Gold Dust.

It’s another unique release in the artist’s catalog. In the tradition of Company Flow’s Little Johnny From The Hospitul (1998), El’s own Collecting The Kid (2005), and more recently Weareallgoingtoburninhellmeggamixxx2 (2007), Hell3 is a fully realized suite of instrumentals that continues to exemplify the producer’s versatile, otherworldly, futuristic and wholly original sonic worldview.

“I wanted to do little mini-movements that had a real beginning, middle and end and then moved on,” says El-P. “The challenge for me was taking all these seemingly unrelated little pieces of music I had laying around and fitting them together as a cohesive piece. I wanted to craft a record that had an arc.”

Given this format, Hell3 both sounds similar to and nothing like anything you’ve heard before. “Drunk With a Loaded Pistol” starts off woozy and deranged before evolving into a warning alarm/drum attack. “Time Won’t Tell” opens as a soundtrack for the apocalypse followed by the layering of guitar-driven pop over boom-bap drums. As the album title implies, El-P creates a dark, dystopian sonic universe filled with ominous basslines and thumping, punishing drums.

Comprised of original instrumentals as well as remix instrumentals to Kidz in the Hall’s “Driving Down the Block” and Young Jeezy’s “I Got This,” Hell3 represents songs that were meticulously crafted yet never found a home on a proper release. While sonically different from J Dilla’s instrumental masterpiece Donuts, that album would prove inspirational to El-P. “Like Donuts, I wanted to keep things short and to the point. I think that’s an aspect of instrumental music that so many more people can relate to. I didn’t want anyone to listen to this record and at any point get bored.”

While the producer is currently working on the follow-up to 2007′s I’ll Sleep When You’re Dead, Hell3 functions as both a stopgap and standalone album. “This was a chance for me to give something to my fans as a reward for their patience as I worked on my new record. With the past Megamixxes, I never sat down and really tried to make a record. It was more like, ‘Here’s a bunch of cool stuff you haven’t heard.’ I look at this new one as a proper album. Me calling it a Megamixxx is just an excuse to get to Volume Three of anything.”
