House Shoes Mixes Legend Dennis Coffey’s History Of Funk

Leading up to the foundational Motor City guitarist’s new self-titled solo album, Detroit’s own House Shoes takes us on a journey through Dennis Coffey’s history of funk. Including the psychedelic b-boy soul of Coffey’s 70′s solo material, classic recordings on which he recorded as a sessions musician, hip-hop cuts which have sampled his material, and even a couple of sneak peaks at the new album’s music, Constellations is 45 minutes of straight heat, mixed by a master DJ intimately acquainted with Coffey’s legacy, and his future.

Check below for the track list, and details on Dennis Coffey’s SXSW 2011 appearances.

Detroit Hustles Harder Vol. 1

If you’ve set foot in Detroit within the past year and you’re not blind, you have no doubt noticed one of the tens of thousands of “Detroit Hustles Harder” stickers plastered throughout the city. As we’re all familiar with the down and out tales told everyday about Detroit, this phrase has become a mantra of power to those that know it.

If you’re a little more in the know then you’re aware that the proprietors of local clothing brand Aptemal, Brendan and JP, coined the phrase. You might also be aware that thousands upon thousands of people wear one of their T-Shirts that bear this very motto.

As you are reading this, you are now aware that the phrase “Detroit Hustles Harder” will be seen plastered on CD covers throughout the metro Detroit area and beyond as founders Brendan and JP prep to release their first musical compilation, “Aptemal Presents Detroit Hustles Harder Vol. 1” . The entire compilation is produced by hometown favorite Eddie Logix (Progress Report, MidCoast Most) and features songs from artists local to the Detroit area that have supported the clothing brand since its inception.

To give the listener a taste of the talent featured on their upcoming compilation, “Aptemal Presents Detroit Hustles Harder Vol. 1.” Tthe fellas at Aptemal Clothing decided to give away 5 songs for free. The sampler features Metasyons (United States of Mind), Progress Report, (United States of Mind), Tenacity (Abolitionists), Intricate Dialect (Abolitionists), and V Count Macula. Aptemal Clothing pronounced op-ti-mal meaning the best or most favorable is a Detroit based independent clothing company created from the ground up in May 2007. We began printing shirts for local musicians and businesses. It wasn’t too long until we started printing our own designs. To get the merchandise out you can see us back pack hustling at festivals, setting up at loft parties and pushing our product any way possible. With continuing support from friends, family and fellow grass root entrepreneurs we have made it to where we are today.” ~ Aptemal

ILLITE – CHAMPION MIXTAPE

ILLITE
“Rock-A-Bye” prod. by Nick Speed

We were kickin it with Nick Speed last night and he put this in my hands. This has got to be one of the hardest mixtapes that I’ve heard from the Detroit area in a minute. I’m not sure why it wasn’t in our hands sooner, but here it is. Detroit based MC, Illite, is a prime example of some of the overlooked raw talent that saturates our city. The Champion Mixtape is hosted by Nick Speed and features production and guest vocals by Magestik Legend, Octane, 14KT, Astronote, Nick Speed, Zhao, and Buff 1 among others.  ~  DOWNLOAD THE CHAMPION MIXTAPE HERE!
