Werc // “Spirit Man”

Introducing artist Werc’s “Spirit Man,” a new limited edition Giclee fine art print. The series is an edition of twenty 22″ x 22″ signed & numbered giclee prints on cotton rag paper.

The piece “Spirit Man,” is a portrait that speaks of discovery, knowledge, rituals and symbolism. All the American Spirit cigarette packages that make up the background of the painting were all smoked by the artist. Each package has been carefully stripped from the word “American” and left only with the word “Spririt” from the title. The artist sees the manipulative charge of these two talismanic words that trigger certain spiritual aspects of being within people. In an act of commercial intervension, Werc takes back the word “spirit,” which has been prostituted in consumerism, in order to empower himself and the viewer.

“Werc is at the forefront of the new generation of Chicano painters. ”Spirit Man” displays great technique and mysterious meaning and leaves it open as to what that meaning is, the hallmark of great art. He is one to watch.” – Cheech Marin

Werc’s work comes from two places, border culture because he was born in Ciudad Juarez, and grew up in El Paso, TX; and graffiti, his urban teacher, because the streets were his training ground as an artist. Werc’s passion for graffiti allowed for new inspirations to transform his artistic career. Werc paints, collages and designs based on inspirtations that come from broad issues of labor, border culture, logos, symbols, architecture, urbanization and the nostalgic humor among immigrant cultures. He is specifically inspired by the creative informal economies of street vendors, the archetypal language of design, and the beauty of developing sustainability in communities. This enables Werc to create collective public art projects with intentions of dissolving all borders and deceptive forms of seperation.

In his paintings, he explores aspects of duality and the politics of identity by hunting and gathering found objects that later become part of his creations. In his public art walls, Werc plays with the preconceived notion of advertisement and the idea of always being sold something. In his street art, he transforms experiences of mass consumption, with the beautification of public spaces. In all of Werc’s work, there is a response to negative customs and a re-affirmation of consciousness that create artworks that reflects social change.

Bulletproof Tiger is an instrumental live-electronic group from El Paso, TX. The plastic-tiger-mask-wearing duo is comprised of the aliased Bobby Miracles (guitar) and Jean-Luc Duvalier (keyboard/synth) who, after meeting in the summer of 2009, began playing together after discovering their passion for both dance/electronic music and hip-hop. Heavily influenced by such groups as Daft Punk, the Twelves and Gorillaz, the intensity and aggressive nature of Bulletproof Tiger’s “dance-bangers” are only complimented by the symbolism behind their tiger masks – which are never removed in public. The tiger masks help to represent the animalistic nature of their music.

MP3: A-WOLL – “The Big Bang Theory” Produced by Nottz

Big Bang Theory

Compton, CA based MC A-WOLL has been keeping busy putting the finishing touches on his debut album, To Whom It May Concern, an album produced entirely by Grammy Award-wining producer Nottz that’s scheduled for release later this year. Following the recent release of “Active,” the first leak from the album on which Nottz was also featured, the pair are excited to release the latest teaser from the album, “The Big Bang Theory.”

Nottz, who knows a thing or two about producing for up-and-coming Compton rappers, having worked extensively with The Game in the past, sings nothing but high praises for the latest talent from the neighborhood Dr. Dre once called home. “A-WOLL is an artist that’s helping to bring a new heart beat to the West Coast,” explains Nottz on his excitement to be working together with the A-WOLL. And this new track, “The Big Bang Theory,” proves Nottz’ strong words to be warranted. Layered with head banging drums, mesmerizing keys, and street loyal lyrics, it‘s easy to see why the West Coast rapper is becoming a home town favorite, as A-WOLL raps, “Respect for the G’s, love for the turf/ Married to the block, for better or worst.”

MadC – 700 Wall

This massive wall by MadC is done and covers over 680m2 of wall space.. MadC is known for massive and detailed concept walls. This year she broke her own record and painted her biggest and most elaborate concept wall ever. Just herself, without help.

700 Wall – Final Update from Molotow on Vimeo.

“And for those out there who like numbers a lot: some days I went up and down the ladder more than 500 times; fell off the ladder 4 times; counted in days I painted more than 4 months every day at least 10 hours; I used 1489 cans; 158 different colours; 600+ caps; 3 different kind of caps, 100 liters primer; 140 liters exterior paint; painted at temperatures from +2C° to +38C° in sunshine, rain, storm, day and night; painted my biggest and smallest piece so far and overall painted my name far more than 100 times on this wall. I’m curious if anyone will guess or find out how many there actually are. I made only one exception from solely painting MadC pieces on this wall. Special place in my heart – special place on my wall.” ~ MadC

Camilo Pardo Releases Limited Edition Print Series

Automotive designer and artist Camilo Pardo releases limited edition art print. 45 Unique and individual art prints available to the public for 1 week only. This Pardo collection features a well-delineated beauty (shades of Emma Peel) in the foreground and a kaleidoscope of varied designs in the background. That’s right – each print is unique unto itself with each one boasting a different background motif painted by Pardo. One of Camilo’s signature racing girls screen printed over the top of each uniquely painted backgrounds.

The art that Camilo Pardo created over the years is all over Detroit. Indeed, a considerable amount of it is present on our freeways at any given moment of the day. The one-time head of Ford Motor Company’s Living Legends unit and designer of the Ford GT, Pardo put verve in the steel curves and reminded us that a car’s first internal combustion takes place in an artist’s mind. It’s external beauty is born there as well. That mind has not ceased from creative labors, even if they’re no longer entirely devoted to Motor City mojo.

Pardo’s paintings and drawings bespeak both his love for linear perfection and his fascination for the manner in which those “lines” deliver aesthetic satisfaction to the viewer. His works genuinely seem to move – and they are energized by what is obviously a rich understanding and respect for popular culture and traditional disciplines. In less talented hands, such a seeming contradiction of forces would negate the best efforts. Pardo makes them reconcile, complement each other, and dance together.

Free Music: The Nuthouse – Camden High & Rising

Breakadawn
Camden, New Jersey collective The Nuthouse consisting of emcees Dave Ghetto and Fel Sweetenberg have released what some say is the most official De La Soul tribute mixtape to date, Camden High & Rising. Not because of the high level of talent exhibited by Ghetto and Sweetenerg, but because this project is hosted by The Compound Show’s Set Free and none other than the Skit Master himself, DJ Prince Paul, producer of many of De La’s most memorable classics.

Now, couple that with the fact that THE NUTHOUSE, are extremely skilled wordsmiths, this project will definately grab your ear as they pay homage to one of hip-hop’s most innovative groups, in a way that only they can.

The group debuted in 1998 with the classic 12″, A Luv Supream on Bobbito’s fabled Fondle ‘Em imprint. Goodvibe Recordings quickly followed up with a Nuthouse EP entitled Deez Nuts which featured cameos by El da Sensai (Artifacts), Planet (Outerspace) and Diamond Back (Deadly Snakes).

They appeared with Slum Village and Bahamadia on the 2000 Goodvibe tour, and has rocked mics on both coasts with hip hop all-stars such as Aceyalone and Jean Grae.

Video Art Piece For Leo Zero’s Disconnect

Here’s a ten minute video art piece from Ninja Tune VJ Mox set to a minimix of tracks from Leo Zero’s Disconnect album on Strut. The video mixes in news images from the UK during the late ’70s and ’80s, from a rubbish collection strike in 1979, the mayhem of a Celtic vs Rangers on-pitch invasion in 1980 and the Brixton riots of 1981 to a bizarre ’70s attempt to smuggle vinyl-shaped pot cakes in record sleeves from Jamaica. Images of Leo’s work throughout his career pepper the visuals including his celebrated days as a resident at Soulsonic in London to his work as a member of A Mountain of One.

Mox is a London-based video director and visual artist renowned for his work with Coldcut, The Cinematic Orchestra and a number of other acts within the Ninja Tune roster. He is presently performing and developing an architectural audiovisual piece entitled ‘Conversations On Space’ with internationally acclaimed pianists Kelvin Scholar and Francesco Tristiano.

Mox’s approach has been described as innovative, moody, deep, clinical. Whether directing videos with agencies Therapy and Flynn, orchestrating visually spectacular theatre pieces for East London Theatre Company or promoting events preceding Britain’s forthcoming 2012 Olympic Games, Mox brings emotional subtlety and sensitivity to all of his work.

Strut presents the first in a new series of compilations, Disconnect, asking some of the world’s leading DJs to explore the darker side of their collections for rarities, secret weapons and unheralded dancefloor winners. We kick off with one of the UK’s finest, Leo Zero aka Leo Elstob.

Elstob has remained an influential figure in contemporary clubland for over 15 years. As a DJ, his pedigree is considerable. Resident at Shrink2Fit during the ‘90s spinning Detroit techno, rare groove and drum & bass alongside 4 Hero, Harvey and more, he is perhaps best known as co-creator of legendary deep house night Soulsonic alongside Stuart Patterson and as a key member of the Faith collective alongside Patterson, Bill Brewster, Terry Farley and Dave Jarvis, “the last bastion of Acid House” as Pete Tong famously nominated it.

As a producer, Elstob has been involved in a series of unique and influential collaborations. In the mid ‘90s, he was a main player in Chicane, with Nick Bracegirdle, scoring the massive single “Offshore” and debut album “Far From The Maddening Crowds.” In 2004, he formed Dab Hands with Mark Wilkinson and Richard Searle, responsible for a string of dancefloor hits and remixes including re-works of N*E*R*D, XPress2 and Lou Reed & David Bowie’s “Satellite Of Love.” Elstob then teamed up with Mo Morris and Zeb Jameson to form psychedelic band A Mountain Of One, writing and producing their acclaimed first album “Collected Works” in 2007, now revered as a Balearic / Cosmic Rock classic.

As Leo Zero, Elstob has become one of the UK’s most in-demand remixers and DJs, re-working a string of A-list pop and rock artists on some startling and unique versions. Highlights include the dark Phil Spector-influenced soul of Paul Weller’s “No Tears To Cry,” an epic piano house take on Florence & The Machine’s “Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up)” and the recent simmering slo-mo 4×4 arrangement of Bryan Ferry’s “Alphaville.”

His Disconnect mix for Strut is a masterclass in the subversive dancefloor sound for which he has become renowned, taking in Afro, disco, reggae, punk, the sound of Factory Records and pioneers like Can, Brian Eno and John Cale. Among the many highlights, Basement 5’s proto punk-reggae bomb “Silicon Chip” in a previously unreleased extended edit from the original tapes, the epic extended version of Propaganda’s “Frozen Faces” and Afro-punk throwdowns from Unknown Cases and Indambinigi.

Gaia – Waverly Development

Here are some images and video footage detailing the third installment of Gaia’s Legacy project, James Rouse is imposed with his own words back onto one of his first development projects in Waverly, Baltimore. Built in 1957, the Waverly development was one of the very first Urban Renewal sites in the United States. Housing stock designated as slum land was cleared for around 300 units and a small shopping center and was originally reserved for white families only.
