7 Grand Records once again pays homage to one of the greatest emcees who ever graced the game, GURU. This time around, you have the chance to listen to an outstanding and very rare remix from GURU and Bob Marley .
In 1999, GURU was asked to record a remix to Marley’s hit song “Johnny Was”, which was originally released in 1976 on Marley’s album “Rastaman Vibration”. GURU’s version was featured on “Chant Down Babylon” (1999), a full remix album by various Hip-Hop and Rock artists covering songs by Bob Marley & The Wailers.
“GURU was asked by the younger Marleys to record the remix song for ‘Johnny Was’ from their legendary father, Bob Marley, in 1999. GURU had never done anything of that sort in his career but he had tremendous respect for Bob Marley as a historic Black man,” 7 Grand Records reminds.
“GURU felt honored to be involved in the project so GURU flew to Kingston, Jamaica and met the Marley family at their compound in the city. After greeting and engaging in traditional rituals, everyone was well inspired. GURU recorded his part for ‘Johnny Was’ and felt it was a high point of his career and one of his most favorite works.”
Almost 10 years later, in 2007, GURU linked up with Damien Marley, Bob Marley’s son, also an aspiring and extremely talented musician. Both collaborated on the song “Stand Up”, which was featured on GURU’s “Jazzmatazz Vol. 4″ (2007) project
“GURU came back to Jamaica in 2006 to record a collabo with Damien Marley titled ‘Stand Up’ for the ‘Jazzmatazz Vol. 4′ album. When we gave Damien the
track, we were not sure what his response would be but he killed it. GURU was blown away at the skills of Damien on the vocals he delivered and the rest is history. GURU has often said that it was a blessing to work with the Marley family.”

El-P has been leaking some tracks from the upcoming Weareallgoingtoburninhellmegamixxx3. The prosepect of a Donuts-style instrumental album from one of the most distinct producers in hip-hop was a lot to think about, and excitement is sure to bubble over with the latest leak, a three part suite of pummeling percussion and sinister synths. Physical copies of Volume 3 of the Megamixx series will include download links to the first two volumes, which were only available at live shows. Weareallgoingtoburninhellmegamixxx3 comes out August 3rd on Gold Dust.
It’s another unique release in the artist’s catalog. In the tradition of Company Flow’s Little Johnny From The Hospitul (1998), El’s own Collecting The Kid (2005), and more recently Weareallgoingtoburninhellmeggamixxx2 (2007), Hell3 is a fully realized suite of instrumentals that continues to exemplify the producer’s versatile, otherworldly, futuristic and wholly original sonic worldview.
“I wanted to do little mini-movements that had a real beginning, middle and end and then moved on,” says El-P. “The challenge for me was taking all these seemingly unrelated little pieces of music I had laying around and fitting them together as a cohesive piece. I wanted to craft a record that had an arc.”
Given this format, Hell3 both sounds similar to and nothing like anything you’ve heard before. “Drunk With a Loaded Pistol” starts off woozy and deranged before evolving into a warning alarm/drum attack. “Time Won’t Tell” opens as a soundtrack for the apocalypse followed by the layering of guitar-driven pop over boom-bap drums. As the album title implies, El-P creates a dark, dystopian sonic universe filled with ominous basslines and thumping, punishing drums.
Comprised of original instrumentals as well as remix instrumentals to Kidz in the Hall’s “Driving Down the Block” and Young Jeezy’s “I Got This,” Hell3 represents songs that were meticulously crafted yet never found a home on a proper release. While sonically different from J Dilla’s instrumental masterpiece Donuts, that album would prove inspirational to El-P. “Like Donuts, I wanted to keep things short and to the point. I think that’s an aspect of instrumental music that so many more people can relate to. I didn’t want anyone to listen to this record and at any point get bored.”
While the producer is currently working on the follow-up to 2007′s I’ll Sleep When You’re Dead, Hell3 functions as both a stopgap and standalone album. “This was a chance for me to give something to my fans as a reward for their patience as I worked on my new record. With the past Megamixxes, I never sat down and really tried to make a record. It was more like, ‘Here’s a bunch of cool stuff you haven’t heard.’ I look at this new one as a proper album. Me calling it a Megamixxx is just an excuse to get to Volume Three of anything.”

Philadelphia duo Dutch released one of the year’s most exciting debuts this week via their label Enemy Soil. A Bright Cold Day is the phantasmagorical journey through the dreams of Jedi Mind Tricks’ production sage Stoupe The Enemy of Mankind, combined with the rich and soulful vocals of Liz Fullerton. Three years in the making, the album is a landmark in the collaboration between Stoupe and Fullerton. First meshing ideas on the Jedi Mind Tricks tracks “Razorblade Salvation” and “Death Messiah,” the duo was inspired to create a new project together which would take them in a different direction, and Dutch was born.
Dutch’s music is a flavorful departure from JMT’s hardcore hip hop sound into blissful martini-dry and scotch-smooth sips of eclectic brilliance. Taking influence from classic trip-hop artists like Portishead and Massive Attack, A Bright
Cold Day is a dark genre-busting time machine that transports the listener to a barstool in the kind of smoky nightclub which James Bond would be most likely to frequent. Just like 007, this album is timeless, sophisticated, and travels to
exotic places that are sure to leave you shaken, not stirred.
Having met and formed while attending school at the University of Houston, The Niceguys bring together elements of the North and South to offer a versatile collection of sincere hip-hop with The Green Room EP – MC Yves Saint hails from Queens, New York, while DJ Candlestick, and producers Free and Christolph call various parts of Texas home.
For the Niceguys, the plan for putting together The Green Room EP was clear. “We just wanted to keep the formula simple,” says Free about the seven-track EP. “Dope beats, dope rhymes and no nonsense.” The song “Not At All” reveals the group’s undeniable energy and ability to pair catchy hooks with rewind-worthy verses, while the EP’s opening track, “Supreme Team”, serves as a Niceguys anthem, showcasing both their musical and lyrical abilities with a mix of boom-bap, bouncing basslines, and growing instrumentation paired with Yves Saint’s winding flows. After a colorful introduction that travels all over the place musically, it is hard not to keep listening to the rest of this EP.
Detroit hip hop collective USM just dropped a two track leak, Smokers Cough, from Draztic and Sleepy Biggs. Take a listen and download “The Rest Did It For Checks” and make sure to check out more music from USM on bandcamp.
“By The Time I Get To Arizona” DJ Spooky & Chuck D Remix”
Update from DJ Spooky:
In the wake of Republican Governor Jan Brewer’s appalling anti-immigrant law, me and Chuck D were rappin’ and we decided to put together an update of his classic track By The Time I get To Arizona. Anyone who knows about hip hop from the early 90′s remembers John McCain’s unwillingness to endorse creating a local version of Martin Luther King’s birthday. The update here is a 21st century look in the rear view mirror. The cliché that “those who don’t learn from the past are doomed to repeat it” still holds sway in our hyper amnesiac culture. I remixed D.W. Griffith’s infamous film Birth of a Nation with a bit of Public Enemy in mind, and later on, they named an e.p. with the same name as my project. Me and Chuck D have done several projects in the past around progressive, non knucklehead hip hop.
Please feel free to download this track and pass it around. We are the media. Feel free to pass it around!
By the way, this is a mashup, and it’s basically not really for sale. I just took a riff from Philly Sound (www.funkadelphiarecords.com), and flipped it. The result, is what you hear here. It’s free, and open. No $!!

Even thought they are going to make us wait a little longer for the full album, you can download this free mixtape, Follow the Drip, mixed by DJ Sicari from the legendary 5 ELA.

We’ve heard a lot about Nas & Damian Marley working together over the past year. Distant Relatives has been long awaited and still not in our hands but here’s another leak from the album, “Patience.”
Diamond District’s yU has recently dropped his solo debut release, Before Taxes. Check out this remix of, “On The Corner,” featuring EyeQ. Produced by DJ Lord Jazz from Lords Of The Underground. The track has a steady beat with a funky boom-bap sax line that will make you nod you head.
“EyeQ and I both liked the sample, ‘Standing on the corner,’ so we decided to build the track’s concept around that.” He continues, “We painted the picture of all the things you’d see.” Their theme is ever-present in the hook, “On the corner you see hustlers be balling / Customers be falling / And the police patrolling the ave / So take this as a warning / Cuz the block be scalding hot when they be out there making cash / The corners.”
Make sure to keep on the look out for the release of the Before Taxes instrumentals and Before Taxes on vinyl next week.
Brooklyn-based hardcore hip-hop artist Necro has always had a reputation for many things. Some of us love him. Some just don’t understand. He has announced the release of his sixth studio release LP, DIE!. I would expect that some things don’t change such as his stylishly crafted explicit lyrics. Lots of sex and violence.
DIE! is the emcee’s vision of hip-hop back from the dead. “Like Nas said, hip-hop isdead,” says Necro explaining the underlying theme behind the album’s artwork and title. “Well if it died, then I am what it would be if it came back to life.”
The new album will be the first release on his own independent record label, Psycho+Logical-Records, and distributed through Universal/Fontana. The label has stated that they have shipped over a million and a half units worldwide. DIE! is scheduled for release on May 18th. Check out this first leak of the record, “Set-It.”
